Important things to do this month…

Dear College Channel members,

We are so excited for our high school seniors who have just made their final college decisions! Keep up the good work, finish up strong, and enjoy your final days of high school.

I recently returned from a trip to Michigan, attending and presenting educational sessions at the IECA annual conference. I learned a lot (especially about AI) , met with many college reps, and toured four colleges: University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Grand Valley State University and Hope College. I love getting the latest information that I can pass on to my students!

We are eager to get our high school juniors on track to select colleges and prepare for their college applications.

For May, we will continue sharing with you the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, a teenage success guide by Sean Covey.

This month we will focus on Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood.

  • Habit 1 says, “You are the driver, not the passenger.”
  • Habit 2 says, “Decide where you want to go and draw up a map to get you there.”
  • Habit 3 says, “ Now, get there! Don’t let roadblocks knock you off course.”
  • Habit 4 says, “Think Win-Win. I can win, and so can you.” It’s the foundation for getting along well with other people and begins with the belief that no one is inferior or superior to anyone else, and no one really needs to be. It’s an attitude toward life, a mental frame of mind.
  • Habit 5 says, “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” In other words, listen first, talk second. If you can learn this simple habit – to see things from another’s point of view before sharing your own – a whole new world of understanding will be opened up to you.

With that in mind, here’s what we have in store for you this month:

HS Juniors:

  • Prepare for upcoming SAT and ACT exams and send us your latest scores. Set up your account and practice online with Method Learning.
  • Sign up for in-person and virtual college events in Naviance. Go to the Colleges tab, then Find Your Fit, then College Events. This is a great way to learn about a college and demonstrate your interest.
  • Start compiling your resume using this Activities Template or build your resume in Naviance.
  • Juniors, continue to research colleges that interest you and if you haven’t already, contact Jan for a personalized college list.
  • Juniors, this is a great time to start brainstorming your college essay. Platinum members, send us a rough draft through Google Docs or set up a meeting with Jan to help brainstorm your essay.
  • Juniors, get a head start and set up an account on the Common App. Your information will roll over when the new apps are ready for you to apply on August 1.
  • Jan recently visited the University of Michigan on her recent college tour. This highly selective research university has something for everyone. Read our review.

As always, let us know if you have any questions.

All the best,
Jan and Tony Esposito
